Blog #5 Christmas

What does Christmas mean to you? Share a memory, a philosophy, a little glimpse at your beliefs! ☺ At my house, Christmas was about being with family, about singing Christmas carols, about laughing, playing games, and cooking fun dinners together. Christmas was so much more about giving, about being together, and laughter... My dad and his best friend once stood on the porch of our house singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot at midnight on Christmas Eve, and that Christmas Eve was dubbed the best ever. We were all about having fun! Share your memories!

  1. When I think about Christmas, the first thing that I automatically think of is Jesus being born because that is what Christmas is really about. In my family, we usually go to church at 10 pm on Christmas Eve, we wake up really early Christmas morning to eat breakfast and open presents with my extended family and then in the afternoon, we go to the other side of my family and eat and open more presents with them. One of my fondest memories of Christmas is in the morning, when all my aunts, uncles, and cousins are there, there is a tradition of having everybody sit in the stairway in my grandmas house and taking a big family picture. The only problem with this though, is that our family has grown to be really big and not all of us fit in the stairway any more.

  2. Christmas is a crazy time for my family because of how large it has grown. The day of Christmas my immediate family gets together for breakfast and open presents together. Then the day after Christmas is the day all the memories begin. There is so many family members that we rent a room large enough because a house is to small. Then we sing carols, open presents, cook food, have a cute play done by the little cousins, and share story about the past year!! Oh and dont let me forget about a week before Christmas my grandma, mom, aunt, and few cousins get together for COOKIE day!! Best day of my life every year. This year we made around 650 cookies!! Then we split them up and send them to all the other family members and local church's!

  3. Christmas means spending time with your family and being thankful for them. I have always loved spending all day with my family and enjoying each other’s company. Of course the kids would get gifts, but the most simple and enjoyable gift was seeing the happy expressions that the kids made when they received their girts. The gift I received was the excitement and joy that each kid had on that day. This Christmas was really different for me due to the fact that I was not with the family I normally spend it with, however it still felt so special to be with distant family and the ones I consider my family even though there is no blood or marriage relation. I have a very unique family situation, but my belief still held strong regardless how different we are.

  4. Since my family moved away from my grandparents at age 5, we are used to having small and relaxing holidays. On the years that we are lucky enough to go home (Colorado), my dad's parents have all of their kids and grandkids over on Christmas Eve. This year, my little brother got to go to Colorado all alone and stay with our aunt. (My sister is 18 and my brother is only 11, so it was definitely strange not having him there- but I know he had a blast in CO). My grandma suggested FaceTiming us so we could say hi to everyone. On the years that we don't get to go home, we have a tradition of opening one gift on Christmas Eve. In our house, we still get stockings from "Santa" and it's still my favorite part! When I was younger, the rule was we could open our stockings before mom and dad got up.

Now, Christmas is less about presents and more about family and traditions. Although it's easy for kids to get caught up in the gifts, I want to teach my future children early that holidays are about family and spending time together. I also love the coziness. The lights, the fireplace, the tree, all of it. (Last year I had my tree up from Nov. 1st to mid-February... oops!)

  5. Christmas for me is a holiday when the closest members of my family get together, eat home cooked meals and enjoy each other’s company. It is very peaceful and relaxing time of the year. It is definitely one of my favorite holidays. After having Christmas dinner my whole family would sit around the Christmas tree, open the presents and share it with others what each person got. Later on we would play board games, which is probably my most favorite and fun part of the night. My brother and I are very competitive; therefore we always try to win against each other. I think Christmas is a magical time when people seem to be much happier and nicer to each other.
